My suspicion is that there was a lot of gold in 4 Bartlett. Someone must have leaked this information to the owners.

hi guys, i bought this house, my grandfather buried a lot of gold in the basement which is why i bidded so high.

i'd be happy to answer any other questions. i'm currently posting this from the basement - it's mouldy in here. if anyone would like to drop by please do, the fridge doesn't work but i did buy some groceries so there will be cheese and crackers for all.

General / Plan 731 Lot 363. Frontage 51.67 ft., Depth 86.67 ft. Zoned R1(h).
« on: August 22, 2006, 03:03:34 PM »
i was just browsing through the ads on this website and saw all these listings that advertised 'depth'. what on earth does that mean?

is there any easy way to read these listings and get even a rough idea of what you're going to see when you drive out there? plan 731? what is that? lot 363? is that the location? frontage & depth - are those dimensions? is that a tiny little lot that's 4000m2? zoned R1(h)? huh?

General / step-by-step guide?
« on: June 23, 2006, 07:13:10 PM »
are one of these available here on this messageboard? it seems like a lot of the questions are always similar, perhaps a basic guide would help a lot?

i have been looking into this since yesterday, so i'm not actually sure if any of this makes sense or not, but

1. check out advertised tax sales. so far i use this website (taxsaleproperty.org) and ontariotaxsales.ca. any other good places for ontario, by the way?

2. if you see something that looks interesting, go to your local registry office and do a title search. i saw the list of registry offices somewhere on this messageboard, and it seems like it costs about $10 to do this yourself. this will tell you if there are any outstanding debts on your property that you would be responsible for if you place a successful bid.

3. do an execution/sherriff's search on the person who previously owned the property, to make sure he doesn't have any debts (only to the crown, correct?), encroachments and i think there was one other thing. if the previous owner has these, you probably have to pay for them as well?

4. go drive out to wherever this place is and make sure there aren't any monsters or dinosaurs or anything on the property

5. follow the directions on the original ad regarding how to place a bid. i think you need to put down 20% and probably fill out some forms.

6. one year passes and if the previous owner hasn't paid up his taxes/what he owes, you suddenly find yourself a landowner/homeowner

yikes i'm sure that's fraught with inconsistencies and mistakes, but as a newbie i would definitely appreciated a corrected version of the above. as i do more research i'll try and post amendments, but obviously if the more experienced people here could fix my mistakes that would be awesome.

General / Re: What is stopping you from making your first bid?
« on: June 23, 2006, 06:49:46 PM »
i don't really know what is stopping me from doing this.

i think the first thing is that when i read something like this:

Property Description:
Roll # 3650-110-004-09907 Lot 3 S King St, Plan 177 in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Province of Ontario as in Instrument Number RA28588. P.I.N. 00872-0069 Land Titles.

i have absolutely no idea how to tell what this place looks like. i know part of this whole venture involves driving out and checking things out, but honestly i wouldn't even know how to start. i took the above example off ontariotaxsales.ca, by the way. how do i know where "Lot 3 S" is on King street? Or is that 3 South King Street? What does Plan 177 mean? What is a Roll Number? A P.I.N. number? Are these referring to maps I might have access too, so I could possibly get ANY sort of rough idea about a place prior to getting in my car and driving up and down Ontario looking for things that could be construed as 'vacant property'?

i started looking into this yesterday, so chances are i'll be able to answer my own questions soon enough.
